“When all of your wishes are granted, many of your dreams will be destroyed.”
“A lot of people don’t want to make their own decisions. They’re too scared. It’s much easier to be told what to do. Americans talk so much about being individualistic, but they don’t want you to be an individual because if you think for yourself then you’re not going to be a part of any trend that they want you to be a part of. They don’t want you to think for yourself. They tell you they do so that you’re happy and you’re stupid and you’re sheep. Anybody intelligent enough to realize what America is, is not going to sit around and do nothing about it. They’re going to be the same way that I am. They’re going to be the same way our fans are. They’re going to be pissed. These people are artists. These people are musicians. They’re taking it out and trying to express it that way. The rest of the world, who are just willing to accept it, are gonna be doing their everyday jobs, and they’re going to be trapped in a rut, and they’re never gonna see it until the day they die, and they’re gonna be disappointed when they don’t go to heaven anyway ’cause they were too stupid to realize that it’s not going to happen.”
“We live in a society of victimization, where people are much more comfortable being victimized than actually standing up for themselves.”
“I never said to be like me, I say to be like you and make a difference.”
“I was not allowed to put the paintings on the cover of the record! Our anticipation was not to create album artwork. We wanted to create a collaboration, and from that came the idea to use it for the cover, because we did not consider the Golden Age of Grotesque to be limited to an album. An album is very limited with censorship, and with time constraints and space constraints. We did intend for the white and black images of me with the ears to be the front and back.
I feel the black one is very American, and the white one is very European. The black one is somewhat more evil, and the white one is kind of innocent. I actually think that the white one, visually, strikes me as more evil. It’s like a Pierrot. You know, American versus European. The entire time that I did it, I don’t think anyone mentioned the blackface and the relevance of it. The relevance of it is the exploitation of a performer, or an artist. The Mickey Mouse was invocative because of the hat, and a lot of people feared that it would be a lawsuit from Disney, but it does not even, in it’s fullest frame, show both ears. The hat that I ended up making is very similar, but it’s asymmetrical, because I have a real problem with symmetry. I like things to be different on both sides, like my brain. The white one, on the other side, is like the child.

All I can say about it is I’m glad that it makes it into the collection of images that represent me as best as it could. I think that it just scratches the surface of what Gottfried and I could do together. Also I think it was most appreciated and understood for it’s biggest quality and it’s biggest political impact.

Like I said, people can take it anyway they want. People took it as serious as it could be in Europe, particularly in France and Paris, and in Japan because they saw my commentary on America. They saw me as much as people see Mickey Mouse as an American symbol. You cover your mouth with blackface, which really represents a franchise, moneymaking, and slave creation of entertainment, that isn’t even human. That’s an animal, on top of a podium that is exaggerated – a comedy form of fascism. It sounds very American to me. It sounds like a Happy Meal. That’s not to say that’s the only way you need to look at it.”
“Capitalism has made it this way, old-fashioned fascism will take it away.”
“First of all, my theory that I’ve really been thinking about since I had so much interaction with Christianity after doing ‘Antichrist Svperstar’, is that Christ was the blue-print for celebrity. He was the first celebrity, or rock star if you want to look at it that way, and he became this image of sexuality and suffering. He’s literally marketed – a crucifix is no different than a concert shirt in some ways. I think for America, in my lifetime, John F. Kennedy kind of took the place of that in some ways. He became lifted up as this icon and this Christ figure. I started to, in my weird drugged version of Hollywood, dream up a world where these dead stars are really saints. Jackie O[nassis] is kind of like Mary Immaculate. That’s what I was thinking when I was writing the album, and I hinted that in a lot of song like ‘Posthuman’.”

“Today I received approximately the 11,504th email this year from a person telling me that they don’t know what to do with their life. And like all of the others, this person asked me if I had any ideas of what they could do, where they could start, where to “find their passion.”
And of course, I didn’t respond. Why? Because I have no fucking clue. If you don’t have any idea what to do with yourself, what makes you think some jackass with a website would? I’m a writer, not a fortune teller.”

Josh Martin
“There’s nothing wrong with condescending to someone if you really are better than them. How do you know if you’re better? Compare your cars. Money in the bank. Dick sizes. Do all that, and if you have the most or best of those things, then feel free to talk down to them. Treat them as an angry parent would a misbehaving child. It’s the only way to teach them not to be such a loser.”

“I swear, it’s like how the Jews are still waiting for the messiah. They’re like, “The next guy to be the son of God is him,” and Jesus was like, “Yo, here I am,” and they’re all, “Nah, the NEXT guy to be son of God is definitely him.””

Herman Melville
“To write a mighty book, you must choose a mighty theme.”

H. L. Mencken
“The most dangerous man, to any government, is the man who is able to think things out for himself without regard to the prevailing superstitions and taboos. Almost inevitably he comes to the conclusion that the government he lives under is dishonest, insane and intolerable, and so, if he is romantic, he tries to change it. And even if he is not romantic personally he is apt to spread discontent among those who are.”
“It is now quite lawful for a Catholic woman to avoid pregnancy by a resort to mathematics, though she is still forbidden to resort to physics or chemistry.”
“As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart’s desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.”

Mephastophilis (Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus)

“Immanuel Kant was a very boring man.”
“These newer, more naive forms of Scientism, also have a strong tendency to call philosophy “a big waste of time”, “pointless arguing”, “nothing but semantics”, etc. Rhetorically, they tend to say that non-empirical ideas have no way to guarantee they are true, so are pointless to talk about. This is a rather ridiculous point to make, since their entire movement is based around spreading a certain set of non-empirical, philosophical norms, which they apparently don’t feel it necessary to open up to criticism. What they mostly seem to mean is, assuming everyone agrees with us on the important philosophic questions, such as atheism, utilitarianism, capitalism, eliminiative materialism, etc., then we don’t need anything but science. Well, this is a maybe true in a strange way, insofar that if everyone agreed on every philosophical position, i.e. if philosophy was solved, then we probably wouldn’t need philosophy. Philosophy, however, has not been solved. Furthermore, if it is going to be solved, it certainly won’t be solved by a bunch of people who don’t even read or engage in philosophy. The real goal is often just to draw a border around what we should or shouldn’t question, because they don’t want any of the fundamental aspects of society to change. And, well, people who don’t want society to change often also find themselves not wanting people to even think about changing society.”
“Actually, maybe that’s where Sartre got the idea, so maybe Dostoyevsky is Sartre’s muse. A lot of his books are kind of just French retellings of Dostoyevky’s very Russian novels. They drink wine instead of vodka. They have ennui instead of murder people. That kind of thing.”
